Vine or shrub, stems to about 10 m long, with short rhizomes. Fruit somewhat fleshy. Seeds with fleshy arils. Stems hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, 2.5–12 cm long, 3–40 mm wide, dull, all veins equally distinct, upper surface a different colour from lower surface, tips pointed. Flowers white to pale pink or mauve, 10–18 mm in diameter, with 6 ‘petals‘, the inner 3 fringed with long wavy hairs. Flowers in few flowered clusters. Seed cases yellow to orange, oval, 10–20 mm in diameter. Seeds black, with white arils partly enclosing the seeds. Flowers spring–summer.
